I have had this picture in my favorites for a very long time.

When I first saw this photo, I started crying. Great, big tears swam down my face when I saw this. The isolation and fear came across so strikingly. The water is still, as if he's the only one in this sick, green world. In the tiny corner, he's almost contemplating his own demise in this little linoleum box. It's a slow death, too. And painful.

The colors are so very perfect. He's all that's alive in this world while everything else has grown moldy and green with discarded decay.

I love this picture for the truth it brings and the sadness it shows. Not for the penguin or even for animals in captivity, but for all of us who are animals in captivity and can feel as he feels - alone and abandoned denied everything he knows makes him feel alive. And for what we do to the earth around us - we trap what fascinates us and isolate it so we can look at it whenever we want, but apart from it's source, its charm wears thin and we can no longer appreciate what we used to love so much. We forget it after we've dissected it. No longer humbled, we destroy out of negligence and apathy.
